He chose what was right over power.

A few years later he was once again called to serve his country, becoming the first President of the United States.

When the new nation of America was first formed, the future was uncertain. The country was young. It was the first nation built on the bold idea that its people should live in freedom.

The forests of Virginia where Washington once walked as a boy were still standing. And high above them, the same North Star still shone.

One day a young aide asked President Washington quietly:

"Were you ever afraid?"

Washington smiled slightly.

"Many times. Courage does not mean you are never afraid. It means you choose the right path anyway."

 

And we are all grateful George Washington chose courage.
